Investigating the organellar proteome of exercise at Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research

Position: Master Student in the Functional Proteomics in Metabolism Group (Deshmukh Group)

Background: Exercise induces the subcellular translocation of a considerable number of proteins involved in a wide range of processes including signal transduction, transcription, substrate transport and secretions. Whilst the translocation of individual proteins has been described in response to exercise (e.g. Glut4, Pgc1, mTOR), only via a proteomic approach can we elucidate subcellular protein translocation at the global level.

The project: This Masters project will apply organelle-specific proteomics to skeletal muscle collected pre- and post-exercise. The student will be responsible for the optimization of fractionation and/or organelle separation techniques within skeletal muscle, as well as the preparation and measurement of organellar fractions via mass spectrometry. The student will be supported by expertise in cellular exercise physiology and mass spectrometry-based proteomics from Dr Ben Stocks and Associate Professor Atul Deshmukh within the Functional Proteomics in Metabolism Group at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research.

The student: Prospective students should have a strong enthusiasm for applying state of the art techniques to explore the molecular mechanisms of health and disease. The appropriate student is likely to have a strong background in metabolic, molecular or protein physiology.
